A Half-Day Program for Teachers and Parents

On November 9, 2024, Ramakrishna Math, Madurai, hosted an insightful  Adolescent Health Awareness Program designed for teachers and parents.
This impactful event was attended by a total of 316 participants, including 180 teachers and 136 parents from 17 schools across Madurai, all united by a common goal: to better understand and support adolescent health.

The programme began at 9:30 a.m. with a prayer song, setting a calm and reflective tone for the day. The event's opening was conducted by Swamis Nityadipananda and Arkaprabhananda, who introduced the program and emphasized the importance of nurturing healthy physical and mental growth among adolescents. Their words highlighted the need for collaborative efforts from teachers and parents in fostering a supportive environment for youth development.

Expert Talks on Adolescent Health
The morning was filled with enriching talks from a distinguished panel of experts from Madurai, each focusing on a key aspect of adolescent health. Here’s a summary of the sessions:

1.Dr. Sundarapandian (M.D.C.H., PG Dip. in Adolescent Health, Certified Autism Specialist) delivered an insightful talk on "Physical & Mental Changes in Adolescents and the Role of Teachers & Parents". He emphasized the physiological and psychological changes that adolescents undergo and the pivotal roles that educators and parents play in guiding them through these transitions. His presentation shed light on understanding the nuances of adolescence and how adults can provide stability during this formative time.

2. Dr. Vidya (M.D., MNAMS, PGDMLE), a Consultant Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist from Karunya Clinic, addressed "Students' Psychological and Behavioral Issues and Their Remedies". Her talk focused on common behavioral challenges in adolescents and offered practical strategies for addressing them. She highlighted the value of empathy and open communication in helping adolescents cope with stress, peer pressure, and self-esteem issues.

3. Dr. Deeban Chakkaravarthy (MPT, PhD in Physiotherapy, Games & Sports Injury Specialist) spoke about "Improving Student Health and Quality of Life through Sports". Dr. Deeban offered a session full of practical insights for identifying potential health issues in adolescents. He emphasized the importance of observing posture, flexibility, and movement to spot early indicators of physical strain or discomfort. Additionally, Dr. Deeban introduced a few simple yet effective stretching exercises aimed at relieving muscle tension, especially from long periods of sitting in school or at home. His tips helped attendees understand how regular stretching and body awareness can prevent injuries and improve overall well-being.

4. Dr. Devi (NPT, Applied Psychology, and Speech Therapist) covered the topic "Hearing & Learning Disabilities, Learning Deficiency, and Solutions". She provided valuable insights into identifying and addressing learning disabilities, focusing on how early intervention and appropriate support can make a profound difference in students' academic and personal lives.

Addressing the Digital Challenge
A major topic of discussion throughout the program was the impact of technology on adolescent health. The speakers highlighted various social challenges stemming from excessive screen time, particularly due to the pervasive influence of cell phones and social media. Both teachers and parents were given strategies to help young people develop healthier relationships with technology, along with practical tools to support balanced digital use.

A Warm Conclusion and Community Bonding
The program concluded at 2:00 p.m., and participants were treated to a nourishing meal. This closing moment allowed teachers, parents, and experts to connect informally, sharing their reflections and thoughts from the day's insights. Many expressed gratitude for the knowledge gained, noting that the sessions opened new perspectives on supporting adolescents through their health challenges.

The Adolescent Health Programme left a meaningful impact on everyone involved, equipping parents and teachers with practical tools and insights to foster a positive environment for adolescent well-being.
